Common Questions About Solar Panels

Everything you need to know before going solar.

Are solar panels worth it in the UK?

Absolutely. Despite the UK's reputation for grey skies, solar panels work efficiently even on cloudy days. With energy prices at record highs, most systems pay for themselves within 6–8 years, then generate free electricity for another 17+ years. With Smart Export Guarantee tariffs, you can even earn money by selling surplus energy back to the grid.

How long do solar panels take to pay back?

Most residential solar panel systems in the UK pay back within 6–8 years, depending on your energy usage, roof size, and orientation. After payback, you're essentially getting free electricity for the remaining 17+ years of the panel's life. Rising energy costs are actually shortening payback periods year on year.

Do I need planning permission?

In most cases, no. Solar panels are classed as "permitted development" in England, Scotland and Wales, which means you don't need planning permission. However, if your home is listed, in a conservation area, or if the panels would protrude significantly, you may need to check with your local authority. Your installer can advise on this.

What happens on cloudy days?

Solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days — typically around 10–25% of their peak output. The UK receives enough sunlight throughout the year for solar to be highly cost-effective. During times when panels don't produce enough, you simply draw from the grid as normal. With a battery, you can store excess daytime energy for evenings.

Can I add a battery to store energy?

Yes, and it's increasingly popular. A solar battery lets you store excess energy generated during the day to use in the evening and at night. This can increase your self-consumption from around 50% to up to 80%, further reducing your reliance on the grid. Battery prices have dropped significantly and many installers now offer bundled deals.
